I have a axyz cnc machine and am having problems findind the correct bits to use for this application. And also what speeds do i run them at.Ive used 1/2" bits and the material tries to pull the bit out of the chuck.Ive also used 1/4" straight flutes and they work a bit better until they break also. If anyone has cut 3cm formica with a cnc please let me know what you are doing.. I would appreciate any advice ya"ll could give.

Thanks,
Brandon Brown

Brandon,
We use Vortex Tool #4260, It runs at 12000 RPM and the feed speed is 300 IPM. The main trick we use is to step cut the material.
Cut in increments of .3125 and do a clean up pass on your last pass. This should leave you a nice looking cut. It's worth the extra machine time it takes to do this.

Mike,

What diameter is that bit and were do i find one? Also Icant imagine you running that at 300.We cut regular half inch at 200. But on the formica we cut 1/4" passes and it takes four passes at a feed rate of 75. And i appreciate the feed back very much.

We found a great bit for the EOS we are cutting. I'll try to get the info on it tomorrow. It is a compression bit with a serrated edge, step cut three times, with a smooth straight bit as a last clean up cut.

Brandon,

The bit is 1/2 diameter, you can call Vortex Tools @1-800-355-7708. We haven't done any Formica but we have done EOS and that bit can cut at 300 IPM. We tried originally cutting with 1/4" bit and it was as slow as you said.

We use 3/8" bit.  You may also want to try a rougher bit.  It has little grooves in the side of the bit so you can cut a faster speeds.  If you use a rougher, it would be wise to clean up the cut with a slow helix, triple flute bit.  It will make a super smooth cut, ready for finishing.

We use a .5" bit run at 18,000 rpm and a feed rate of 150 and step cut 3 times. It works well, but i have noticed that the corners of the material seem to blow out no matter how slow or fast we cut.

Have you tried going clockwise around the piece you want to cut?  This may help with the blowout on the corners.
