The earlier years of my being a solid surface warranty agent closely led the years that the large home center stores were reinventing ways to work the kitchen market. They had advantages that other outlets couldn’t...

Tom, your thoughts and comments are insightful, especially since I know you practice what you preach. Years ago I was introduced to the concept of the "Mather Top" -- a branded countertop experience only available from Mather. What a great idea and excellent positioning of your company in the marketplace!

I personally believe solid surface can also be marketed as a countertop for the people as a commodity product and still retain its integrity. Now that technology and process engineering has improved fabrication and installation quality, why shouldn't there be a no-frills option that allows us commoners to afford the beauty, elegance and worry free maintenance of a quality solid surface product?

Service-oriented, custom craftsman will continue to dominate the high-end side of the business, while streamlined, production shops can service the middle. Just make sure each segment adheres to rigid standards that define their unique purpose(s) in the marketplace.

The barn door of commoditization of solid surface is wide open and the cows have mostly escaped. There ought to be a place for highly-custom/high-service-oriented shops as well as efficient, well-run production shops in our diverse economy -- with their respective price points.

Russ,
as usuall, I don't disagree with your assessment. The problem is, once you have created that downward trend of the commoditized top, you are begging for quality failures. It satisfies a market, true, but at the inevitable cost of choice and, sadly, quality.

There will be/are too many shops that will see the dollar in the top, rather than the craftsmanship in the job.
